Description:

Sir Alfred Munnings (British, 1878-1959)
GORSE BUSHES IN EAST ANGLIA, 1909
oil on canvas, framed, signed & dated: lower right, A.J. Munnings, 1909
H14" W18"

Provenance: Purchased from Frost & Reed, stock # 56576S
Gift from the estate Mary Parkinson Grew of Woodstock, Vermont
Sold to benefit an anonymous institution

Other Notes: Munnings often captured the sun-tipped gorse flowers in bloom on the common heathland around his native home in Suffok or the areas around Norwich in the first decade of the 20th century. He made a practice of painting these heady coconut and vanilla-scented blossoms experimenting with the play of chiaroscuro patterns of dark and light while painting entirely in the open, en plein air. Using a limited color pallet, he has alternated the dense foliage with smooth grassy areas creating a winding and lyrical quality to the compositional arrangement.

We would like to thank Lorian Peralta-Ramos for the catalogue entry and for authenticating the work. She is currently working on the catalogue raisonné for Munnings.

    Condition:
  • Condition statement: canvas support relined, and slightly sagging on stretcher. UV examination reveals few spots on inpainting/retouching mainly across the sky. Stretchers appear to be replacements, and frame is contemporary.
