South Carolina land grant, signed by Governor James Glenn Dated 1747a grant for 483 acres of land to Samuel De Saurency in Craven County,located in the Welsh tract on the northwest side of the Pedee River, with plat. Missing ribbon and seal. H 11.5in W 15in *Provenance: James Glenn (1701-1777), a native of Scotland, served as British Royal governor of South Carolina from his arrival in the colony in 1743 until 1761. Noted for his interest in Indian affairs, he negotiated several land purchases from the Cherokees and he personallydirected the construction of Fort Prince George, an important fort among the Lower Cherokee towns, in 1753. He wrote, in 1749, an important treatise on the colony that was published in 1761 as a DESCRIPTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA. After his service in South Carolina, Glen returned to Great Britain, dividing his time between England and Scotland. This grant from the Lanneau family, of Charleston, SC.
