Description:

Southern Federal six-board yellow pine blanket chest circa 1800
rectangular top with applied molding, hinged over dovetailed box with interior till, on straight bracket feet.
H21" W43 3/4" D17"

Provenance : Property from Halcyon Grove, Edgefield, South Carolina.

Other Notes: It was determined from family correspondence that this chest came from The Grove Plantation on Meeting Street Road in 1865 when Shemual Wright Nicholson moved his daughter Lucy Jane Glover Nicholson to Halcyon Grove after the death of her husband. Lucy was the wife of John Pearson Bates who died at Green Pond, South Carolina while serving in the Confederate Army. The move insured the safety of Lucy and her children after the Civil War, as they would be living in the village of Edgefield rather than on a country plantation.
