Southern sterling bowl, W. G. Whilden & Co Charleston, South Carolina (wk. c. 1850)
squat baluster form bowl with scalloped rim and pedestal base, profusely chased with acanthus, floral, fishscale, and stippled bands; cartouche engraved S.C.A and opposing side A.G.A. (Ann Gadsden Adger); marked: Wm. G. Whilden & Co., 925, E&S, and #193.

Other Notes: Copy of handwritten family history states: Ann Gadsden Adger married Harry Morris Grimball. Harry's great grandfather was George Trenholm. Harry's great great grandfather was the Morris who signed the Declaration of Independence. Ann and Harry owned Pine Barren Plantation on Edisto and their grandparents lived on the Battery. The Adger's owned a fleet of ships.

Special Note: George Alfred Trenholm was born in Charleston, South Carolina. At the age of sixteen he left school and went to work for a major cotton broker, John Fraser & Co. in Charleston. By 1853 he was head of the company. When the Civil War broke out, John Fraser & Co. became the Confederate government's overseas banker and financed its own fleet of blockade runners. One of these may have been the SS Georgiana, sunk in naval action near Charleston, SC in March 1863. Trenholm was appointed Confederate Secretary of the Treasury on July 18, 1864. He fled Richmond with the rest of the government in April, 1865. Due to illness he resigned on April 27, 1865. He was later briefly imprisoned at Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Georgia.
