Description:

Southern yellow pine huntboard Lexington County, SC, circa 1820-1840 rectangular square-edged top, over case with applied molding beneath top and two deep drawers, upon tapered and scratch-beaded legs. (Good condition consistent with age) H45" W49 1/2" D21 3/4" *Note: The tapered and scratch beaded legs, iron locks, applied molding along underside of top, mortise and tenon joinery and dovetailed drawer construction are rather sophisticated for a form that is often merely utilitarian. The top, sides, rear and two drawer fascia boards appear to be cut from the same yellow pine stock and are utilized in a fashion that suggests that the piece was never painted. For example, the drawer fascia are bookmatched for aesthetic effect and there is a general uniformity to the manner in which the remaining stock articulates. The piece has a recovery and oral history in Lexington County, South Carolina. The utilization of wedged dovetails in the construction of the drawers, which is a decidedly Germanic trait, is in keeping with the predominant ethnic population of the Lexington area during the nineteenth century.
