Stephen Grant cased 12-bore SxS hammer sporting gun circa 1889
27 5/8" Damascus barrels. Smooth concave rib marked: STEPHEN GRANT & SON, 67A ST. JAMES STREET, LONDON. Sling swivel base on lower rib. Case-hardened action border engraved with 80-line foliate scroll. Repounding bar-action locks. Low hammers. Greener cross-bolt. Low percussion fences. Checkered half-pistolgrip stock of figured English walnut. Round knob grip. Vacant brass oval. Heel and toe plates. Drop points. Splinter forend with Anson type release. Recent trunk case with maker's label. Barrel Dimensions: Bore 0.729" / 0.729". Chokes: Cylinder/Cylinder. Chambers: 2 5/8". Proof: London Nitro, 12, 12, 12c, 1 1/8. Stock Dimensions: Pull: 13 5/8". Drop at Comb: 1 1/2". Drop at Heel: 2 3/8". Cast Off: None. Weight 6 pounds 6 ounces. SN 5993.


Literature: Stephen Grant, Gunmaker, was apprenticed to Kavanagh of Dublin before coming to London where he is believed to have been with Charles Lancaster prior to working for Thomas Boss. On Boss's death in August 1857, his widow made him Managing Partner. He ran Boss's firm for ten years before deciding to set up on his own at 67A St. James Street, London, 1867. Grant & Woodward, shooting & fishing agency, est. s.a. 1884. Stephen Grant & Sons, 1889 s.a. 67 & 69 St. James Street , London. Succeeded to Joseph Lang & Son Ltd. and became Stephen Grant & Joseph Lang, Ltd. s.a. 1925; succeeded to business of Harrison & Hussey, q.v. 1930, then to Charles Lancaster, Watson Bros., Frederick Beesley, Henry Atkin, then E.J. Churchill. Now established as ATKINS, GRANT & LANG at 6 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London with it's factory at 53 Wildhill, Essendon, Hertfordshire.

  • Very good to excellant overall. Good Damascus pattern on plum brown barrels very slightly pitted, should hone out nicely. Sharp full coverage rose and scroll engraving. Wood is fine checkering sharp.
