Thomas Turner, Birmingham, England camp chest and rifle for R. J. Reynolds Enfield .577 percussion rifle musket with socket bayonet, circa 1884, serial no. 3751, with a case-hardened lock and hammer, side lockplate marked: THOMAS TURNER / FISHER STREET / BIRMINGHAM, three split type blued barrel bands secured with screws, full walnut stock, THOMAS TURNER cartouche stamped into the right side of the butt, brass buttplate, nosecap and triggerguard with steel ramrod and sling mounts.

together with a traveling picnic case for six comprised of a black canvas over wood chest with side-lifting handles, cover embossed: R.J.R. opening to reveal tan leather-lined interior with the lid fitted with silver plate forks, spoons and ivory-handled knives and six ceramic sandwich plates; and the body fitted with large thermos, four tin and enamel sandwich boxes, enamel butter and preserve pots, six nesting tumblers, and two pairs of clear glass salt and pepper shakers.

Other Notes: This gun and camp chest supposedly came from the estate of R.J. Reynolds and was reportedly deaccessioned from his museum at Winston Salem, North Carolina. In 1893 R.J. Reynolds embarked on a Safari to the Belgian Congo in Africa. Family lore states that he ordered both this camp kit and the rifle from Thomas Turner, Birmingham, England to accompany him on safari. Thomas Turner is documented in Birmingham from 1805 to 1890, and on Fisher St. from 1838. He received several acknowledgments for innovative applications.
