Three-piece Spode covered garniture circa 1817 suite comprised of one large and two small vessels with reticulated fitted covers surmounted by gilt flame finial on trumpet form body adorned with floral group in shaped cartouche and additional floral sprigs on cobalt ground-laid color background with gilt leaf pattern, accented with white beading on gold band on top edge and base, raised on three gilt paw feet, inscribed: Spode, 2575. (Normal wear with one small vase cover repaired) H8 1/2" and H7 3/8" *Provenance: Property from the estate of a Southern lady. *Note: These interesting vases are a brilliant illustration of the art of gilding as practiced by Spode. The process by which this intricate decoration was executed is detailed and long, often taking weeks to complete. This pattern was designed under the auspices of Henry Daniel, the first Art Director brought into the Spode operations to ensure the company kept ahead of the market by introducing tasteful and desirable patterns.
