Addison graduated from Dartmouth College in 1878 and was member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He was a lawyer in New York City and also a musician, songwriter, poet, and "musical agent" - arranging musical events, representing musicians and soloists. He also was a prolific writer and contributor to various newspapers including the New York Times. In addition to writing poems, he reported on many social and musical events. He was a life member of the New York Press Club.

He and Ella had one son, Fletcher Reed Andrews. In 1910 the census reports they were residents of West 57th St., Manhattan. In 1920 the two of them were residents of the Bersford Hotel in Manattan.

His father, Rufus Freeman Andrews (b. Medina, Ohio, May 27, 1825, d. New York City April 27, l893) was also a graduate of Dartmouth College in 1862. He was a lawyer in New York City, and in July 1861 was Surveyor for the Port of New York under Abraham Lincoln. He was a delegate from New York to the Republican National Convention in Baltimore in 1864. After his marriage to Mary Cornelia Fletcher (b. Cavendish, Vermont, April 4, 1828) in Cavendish, Vermont they lived in New York City. In 1870 they were living on Park Avenue. In 1899 his law offices were located at 38 Park Row, Manhattan.

As reported in the New York Times on Feb. 13, 1898, Addison F. Andrews, son of the late Rufus F. Andrews, presented to the New York Press Club the pen with which Abraham Lincoln signed the Proclamation of Emancipation. It was given to R. F. Andrews by Mrs. Lincoln shortly after the President's death, when she was distributing mementos to the intimate friends of the President. It had never been out of the possession of the Andrews family. Addison was a life member of the Press Club. Rufus was one of those at the deathbed of Lincoln.
