U.S. Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor saddle ring carbine circa 1880, serial number 134037; .50-70 caliber, marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and spread eagle on lockplate, "U.S. MODEL 1873" on breech block, "VP" at breech end of barrel, "U.S." on buttplate, blued finish, straight grip walnut half-stock, ladder-type rear sight, compartment in buttplate for (missing) three-piece cleaning rod.
