Description:

Very rare North Carolina walnut corner cabinet, peaked pediment school Randolph County, circa 1790-1820 peaked cornice with canted corners above wavy molding and plain pediment, conforming case with pair of eight-light doors on lower part with waist molding continuing up and down stiles and paneled doors with wavy molding surrounds, on molded base with bracket feet; poplar secondary wood. (Good condition consistent with age) H89 1/2" W47" D27" *Provenance: Found in Caswell County, NC. *Note: Recently discovered, this cupboard belongs to a small group of case pieces associated with artisans working in Randolph County, North Carolina in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Foremost among these artisans was Jesse Needham, whose work has been documented by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (MESDA).The most unusual aspect of the piece, the triangular or "peaked" pediment, is found on other objects from this particular shop, most notably a river birch tall chest currently in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Williamsburg example exhibits a scalloped fillet below the cornice molding which is identical in its design, application and execution. Only one other corner cupboard from this group, albeit from a different shop, has been identified by field researchers at MESDA. A copy of the MESDA file (NCP-7-107) is included with the piece. These unusual pieces are notable for their rarity, architectonic pediments and sophisticated execution and are highly sought after by collectors of Southern piedmont furniture.
