Description:

Westley Richards 12-bore black powder proof shotgun Barrel length: 30"; Chambers: 2 1/2"; Chokes: R 0 L 25; Material: Damascus; Rib: game; Locks: boxlock; Operating lever: top-lever/doll's head; Stock length:14 1/2"; Grip type: straight; Weight: 6lb 12oz. SN13525.

This is a very nicely scroll-engraved Westley Richards boxlock, built as in the original Anson & Deeley patent, with a bolted top-lever and doll's head and without Purdey under-bolts. It retains its original black powder proof marks and is of high quality throughout. The 30" Damascus barrels are choked approximately True Cylinder and 1/2 choke. The 14 1/2" well-figured straight-hand stock has checkered side-panels. Westley Richards boxlocks were built to a very high standard during this period and this is a very good example. The splinter forend is attached by the Deeley & Edge patent catch.

Other Notes: William Westley Richards, the firm's founder, was succeeded by his son, Westley Richards, in the 1860s. Westley took the company through some of its greatest successes, notably the invention, manufacture and licensing of the famous Anson & Deeley action of 1875. William Anson was a foreman at the firm and John Deeley a director. The Anson & Deeley 'boxlock' was the first truly successful hammerless gun to emerge.

    Condition:
  • Minor pitting inside barrels; exterior has no dents, minor scratches. Wall is 30.+ on both barrels; no load information available, stamped ''Not for Ball.'' Original color left except at the forend where the hand holds the barrel; no cracks or splits in wood. Gun is an extractor, all serial numbers match. Straight grip is original, with re-cut checkering; wood is lovely. Gun works perfectly, has auto-safety; tight and all appears to be original. Gun is No. 2 of a pair with engraving of a gundog on the trigger guard, oval has crest with ''Pro Patria.''
