Other Notes: James Baird Quinn (1843-1915) held a long military career beginning in 1866 at the U.S. Military Academy. Quinn held various positions in Michigan, Virginia, Missouri, New Orleans and Texas with the Corps of Engineers. In 1890 the War Department authorized Major Quinn and the Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans to direct the construction of two forts to defend the strategic area of Sabine Pass, as the pending Spanish-American conflict was brewing. Quinn is also credited with overseeing the improvements to Norfolk harbor. Promoted to Colonel, Quinn retired in 1907, died in 1915 at the age of 71, and is buried at West Point Cemetery.

James B. Quinn married Estel C. Quinn (1873-1938). They had two children late in life, a son James L. Quinn (1908-1980) and daughter Myrtis L. Quinn (1910-1998).
