To Peirce Butler (South Carolina Senator)
"We have received the letter which you did us the honor of writing yesterday, requesting on that part of the State of South Carolina a delivery of vouchers exhibited by that state in support of her claim against the United States
These vouchers with all others which were exhibited to us were upon the expiration of our commission delivered by the direction of the President of the United Stats to the Treasury Department; our powers have of consequence ceased & we have no control whatever over the vouchers.
Mr. Theus the Agent of the State of So. Carolina made a similar request before the delivery of the papers into the Treasury Department-but we did not concessive ourselves authorized to return them.

The three gentleman were commissioners of the "Commission for Settling Accounts Between The United States and Individual States" (a commission to settle Revolutionary War claims c.1790-4)

Other Notes: Pierce Butler (1744-1822), Irish-born, an American Founding Father, a South Carolina rice planter, politician, an officer in the Revolutionary War, a member of the Congress of the Confederation, a delegate Constitutional Convention, where he signed the United States Constitution, and an inaugural member of the United States Senate (1789-1796).

William Irvine (1741-1804) Irish-born, a physician, soldier, and statesman from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Irvine was a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and served under General George Washington; and later became Representative of the State of Pennsylvania.

John Kean (1756-1795) Charleston-born, a merchant, banker, and member of the Continental Congress from South Carolina. After General Washington became the first President of the United States, he appointed Kean cashier of the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia which he served at until his death.

Woodbury Langdon (1739-1805) Portsmouth, New Hampshire-born, a merchant, statesman and justice from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was the brother of John Langdon, a Founding Father who served as both senator from and Governor of New Hampshire.
