William Lamb Picknell Massachusetts (1854-1897) ROCKY COAST oil on canvas, framed, signed: lower right, Wm Lamb Picknell H28 1/4" W36 1/8" *Artist biography: William Picknell was born in Hinesburg, Vermont on Oct. 23, 1853. However, he was based in Massachusetts for most of his life, and he was constantly on the move. He made several extended trips to Europe in search of subject matter and venues for exhibition. He studied with George Inness in Rome from 1873-75 and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1875-77. Picknell then painted in Brittany for four years under Robert Wylie. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1876, where he was awarded for his painting THE ROAD TO CONCARNEAU. In 1882, Picknell returned to the Massachusetts coast and opened a studio. He traveled to California in early 1892 and spent one year. Returning to the East Coast, he became seriously ill of a lung disease in the 1890s. Picknell died in Marblehead, Massachusetts on Aug. 8, 1897. He was a member of the following organizations: Society of American Artists; Royal Society of British Artists; ANA. He exhibited at the following places: Paris Salon, 1876, 1880 (award), 1895 (medal); Royal Academy (London), 1877; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1881; World's Columbian Expo (Chicago), 1893 (medal); Atlanta Expo, 1895 (medal); Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1896; Saint Louis Museum, 1897 (solo); Boston Museum, 1898. His works are located in the following places: Metropolitan Museum; Corcoran Gallery of Art; Cleveland Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Fogg Museum (Harvard); French National Collection; Boston Museum; Phoenix Museum; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
