Other Notes: Winston Churchill, famed prime minister of the United Kingdom throughout most of World War II, had a lasting friendship with Canadian shipping and wood pulp magnate, Colonel Frank W. Clarke. Churchill met Clarke during the General Strike in England in 1926 while he was working for the British Gazette, a newspaper that was only published during the week of the General Strike. Churchill and Clarke formed a lasting friendship, each visiting each other's homes numerous times. Churchill and his wife spent six days in Clarke's two camps in Canada following the Quebec Conference in 1943, his first vacation since the beginning of the war. In 1946, following Churchill's departure from the post of Prime Minister, Churchill and his wife spent a six week vacation at Clarke's winter home in Miami, during which time Churchill prepared for his famous Iron Curtain speech. In this letter, Churchill states he is looking forward to seeing Clarke and his wife at Chartwell, the Churchill family home.
