Abraham Ortelius (Ortel) (1527-1598), published in Antwerp by Franz Hogenberg, circa 1570
hand-colored engraved world map with galleon and sea monsters, Latin text on verso with legends, textual panels and decorative features. between the oval circumference of the map and the outer frame are billowing clouds, and top with title banner and lower with quotation from Cicero.

Other Notes: One of the most famous cartographers in history. A contemporary and friend of Gerardus Mercator, Ortelius was actually the first of the two to produce the first modern atlas called the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum published in 1570. This work contained maps that were uniformly sized, bound together and reflected the contemporary knowledge of the time. The atlas contained works by Ortelius as well as by some of his contemporaries. It was very popular and remained in publication in a variety of languages until 1612.

Condition:

Vertical crease running along center to map which have been mended/backed some time ago. There are some stains and foxing throughout. It appears that the edges/ margins may have been trimmed.
