Document: Fisher Ames autographed letter signed to John Rutledge Jr. from Fisher Ames, dated Dedham, [Massachusetts] 16 February 1801, political letter from a former Federalist member of Congress to a sitting member explaining the reasons he supported Aaron Burr rather than Thomas Jefferson in the unsettled presidential contest of 1800. "...if Jeff. will not and Burr will promise to spare what ought not to be Destroyed, that Burr ought to be preferred. This, I understand, is the case, and B. works like a silk worm to effect his own exaltation."
together with: War of 1812 in Georgia, Report of the Military Action at Point Peter, Georgia and the Capture of St. Mary's, 13 January 1815, copy of a letter written by Brigadier General John Floyd to Major General Thomas Pinckney, enclosing a copy of the report of Captain Abraham A. Massias, commanding the detachment of United States troops at Point Peter, recounting the engagement with British forces that landed on Cumberland Island, certified as a true copy of the original filed among the military papers of General Thomas Pinckney by C. C. Pinckney, executor of General Pinckney and dated 6 February 1841.

Provenance: Descended in the Rutledge-Rose Family of Charleston, South Carolina.

Other Notes: Fisher Ames (1758-1808) was a Massachusetts congressman known for his Federalist views.

    Condition:
  • Ames letter with normal age discoloration, creases, tears, and small loss to one section. War of 1812 Military Action Report in good condition with losses and some pierced sections to paper.
