Description:

Early South Carolina land grant dated 1775 printed form with manuscript entry of grantee's name and other details. Grant to Darby Pendergrass of 200 acre tract of the Great Peedee River, signed by Governor William Campbell.

Provenance : From the library of August Kohn. August Kohn (1868-1930), Columbia, South Carolina journalist and businessman, assembled one of the finest private libraries of South Caroliniana in the country. He was an avid collector of books, pamphlets and maps related to his beloved native state. A writer of ability, he wrote for the Charleston News and Courier after graduating cum laude from South Carolina College in 1889. He also wrote pamphlets about the towns of Orangeburg and Columbia and, in 1903, published a significant work titled THE COTTON MILLS OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

  • Creases, tears, and stains to paper, all consistent with age.
