Jane Beverly Evans South Carolina (1866-1950) PORTRAIT OF THOMAS EVANS, ESQ. (1790-1845) oil on canvas, framed inscribed on verso H28" W24" *Note: Verso inscribed " Thomas Evans, Esq. (1790-1845) of Marion, South Carolina, Copy by Jane B. Evans, after Gardiner." *Note: Sitter Thomas Evans, Esq. was a merchant, planter, State senator and master of equity of Marion, South Carolina. *Artist biography: Jane B. Evans, descendant who was born in Florence, SC. The portraits were painted from the 1832 original by Gardiner which hang in the Florence Museum. Jane Evans studied art in Philadelphia when she was a young woman and she lived in Rome for at least a year. She lived in Florence from the first decade of the 20th century and founded the Florence Museum in the 1930's. She painted portraits for friends in Florence.
