John Drayton, South Carolina land grant and signature (1767-1822) to William Allen, granting seventy-four acres of surveyed land, dated 24 April 1809, H11 1/2" W15 1/2" (Yellowed, chipped and torn); signature on document fragment 'I am respectfully Yr. Excellency's Obt. St. John Drayton', H5" W4 1/4" (Mounted on backing sheet). *Biography: John Drayton was born June 22, 1767 in St. Andrews Parish, SC. He served in South Carolina's House of Representatives from 1792-1798 and as Lieutenant Governor from 1798-1800. On December 4, 1800, Drayton served several months as governor prior to the election of 1800 upon succeeding to office at the death of Edward Rutledge. He was then elected to his first full term by the South Carolina General Assembly by secret ballot. On December 8, 1808, Drayton was elected for his second term as governor by secret ballot. The auditorium at the University of South Carolina's Wardlaw College was named for Governor Drayton. He died November 27, 1822 and is buried in Charleston.
