Other Notes: The Charles W. Morgan is world's oldest surviving merchant vessel, and the only surviving wooden whaling ship from the 19th century American fleet which numbered 2,700 vessels.

In February of 1841, Mr. Charles Waln Morgan, an independent merchant and whaling agent, chose the shipyard of Jethro and Zachariah Hilllman of New Bedford, Massachusetts to build a new ship for him. His namesake was launched on July 21, 1841 and registered at 106 1/2 feet long, 27 feet 2 1/2 inches in breadth, 13 feet 7 1/2 inches deep, with a displacement of 314 gross tons. She was outfitted for the next two months and set sail on her three-year maiden voyage, sailed by Captain Thomas Norton. She returned to her home port January 2, 1845, having processed 59 whales for 1,600 barrels of sperm oil, 800 barrels of right whale oil, and five tons of whalebone.

In the Charles W. Morgan's 80 years of service she made 37 voyages from her home port, ranging from nine months to five years. It is said that she brought home a grand total of 54,483 barrels of sperm whale oil and 152,934 pounds of whalebone.

She is now preserved at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut.
