Description:

Southern stoneware storage jar, attributed to Dave Edgefield, South Carolina, circa 1850
well-formed rolled lip above proud tab handles on ovoid body; decorated in olive alkaline glaze, lightly incised signature or verse under left handle.
H15" W11 1/4"

Provenance: South Carolina private collection.

Other Notes: This piece is a possible Dave verse jar, the inscription on the pot was possibly done before the handles were applied and could have been partially covered when the handles were added. It's possible that there was a time when Dave was discouraged from writing on his vessels and this could be a transitional piece from that era. The inscription on this piece is a sentence that starts with "The" and ends with what looks to be a proper noun and a period.

    Condition:
  • Good overall condition having minor glaze skips and firing anomalies as made condition consistent with age.
